The Kopser for Congress campaign released the following statement from Texas Senator Kirk Watson and Texas Representative Donna Howard:

Senator Kirk Watson said: “I couldn’t be more excited by or proud of the energy we have seen in Texas 21. Since the last election, our party has produced a multitude of qualified candidates who have led substantive conversations with the voters of this district. While any of these candidates would be a great improvement, one candidate has proven himself to be the Progressive fighter we need to send to Congress. That person is Joseph Kopser.

Watson added: “I’ve worked with Joseph on issues ranging from innovation to veteran homelessness. I’ve seen his leadership qualities, his passion for fighting for what’s right and his drive to find solutions to our toughest problems. I know that Joseph will be a Representative for all in TX-21, providing a new direction and support for the voters of this district. Joseph will make us proud in Congress, and I am proud to announce my support of him today.”

Representative Howard said: “Those of us in public service put ourselves forward as candidates because we believe in fighting for the issues that often impact the most vulnerable among us. Moving the needle on these issues requires a readiness to compromise and a willingness to engage those who might not agree with us. Throughout his service in the Army, his work in business, and his activism in the community, Joseph has proven his dedication to Progressive values and his ability to get stuff done time and again. He is exactly the kind of leader we need to send to Congress.

Howard added: “This race for TX-21 is going to be a fight. I know what it takes to win a tough election — in 2010, I won my reelection campaign by four votes. We need to compete for every vote, and Joseph has shown he has the background, capacity, and message to reach voters across this district and build the coalition that we need to win. We cannot help the people we are fighting for if we do not win in November.”

Joseph Kopser added the following statement:

“I am very proud to have earned the trust and support of Senator Watson and Representative Howard, and to add them to our growing coalition of support in TX-21. Throughout their careers, Senator Watson and Representative Howard have worked to ensure that the values and priorities of the Texas Legislature reflected the needs of everyday, middle class Texas.

That’s the foundation of what we’re building here in TX-21.”

This endorsement adds to a growing list of leading Democratic Party leaders supporting Joseph Kopser including Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, Commissioner Garry Mauro, Paul Begala, and Matt Angle. They join institutional supporters supporting Kopser for Congress, including Vote Vets PAC, 314 Action Fund, Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, Congressman Seth Moulton, and the Texas Lone Star Project.

First elected to the Texas Senate in 2006, Kirk Watson represents Senate District 14, which now covers most of Travis County and all of Bastrop County.

Kirk has approached the Texas Legislature with many of the same goals and strategies he pursued throughout his career in public service – building new coalitions, working with all sides, and preparing for Texas’ future.

He served as chairman of the Texas Senate Democratic Caucus beginning in 2011 and continued in that position through the 2015 legislative session.

After five legislative sessions, Kirk has been widely recognized for his idealism as well as his effectiveness. Texas Monthly magazine recognized him as one of Texas’ 10 Best Legislators in 2009. It also named him Legislative Rookie of the Year in 2007 and gave him an Honorable Mention in its coverage of best legislators in 2011 and 2013.
